Operation Alchemy, protecting our rural communities

Some people naively think that our countryside communities are sleepy and that they suffer no crime, but this is not the case. They face crime just like the urban areas do, but often crimes specifically targeting their vulnerabilities, being on county borders, being far away from emergency services hubs and uniquely expensive rural tools and vehicles. Our rural communities are so important to Gloucestershire. Farmers, landowners, rural businesses and residents should be able to live and work without fear of becoming victims of organised crime. That is why I welcome the success of Operation Alchemy, a major multi-agency operation that took place a couple weeks ago that delivered significant results in tackling criminality in our countryside.

Operation Alchemy was a coordinated day of action involving 10 agencies working together across Gloucestershire and Herefordshire. It demonstrated the power of partnership working in tackling organised crime that often crosses force boundaries and affects communities across the region. During the operation, six people were arrested and suspected stolen plant machinery and other items worth more than £300,000 were seized.

Police executed six warrants at farm sites and commercial premises in Pendock, Staunton, Redmarley and Stroud as well as Ledbury in Herefordshire. Across those locations, officers recovered numerous items of suspected stolen machinery, vehicles and equipment. In one notable example, a dumper truck, reported stolen from Cardiff on the very same morning, was recovered during the operation.

The theft of agricultural and construction machinery can have a devastating impact on rural businesses. Farmers and contractors rely on this equipment to earn a living, and the loss of high-value machinery can cause significant financial hardship and disruption. Operations such as this send a clear message that law enforcement and partner agencies are determined to pursue those involved in organised criminal activity and recover stolen property wherever possible.

What makes this operation particularly encouraging is the strong partnership approach behind it. Gloucestershire Constabulary worked alongside: West Mercia Police, the National Construction & Agriculture Theft Team, British Transport Police, the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit, Immigration Enforcement, the Environment Agency and other partners to deliver this day of action.

The success of Operation Alchemy shows that organised criminals will not be allowed to operate unchecked in our rural communities. I’ve consistently made commitments to tackle rural crime, even since before I was first elected, because I understand just how much it affects lives in this county. This operation hopefully shows you, that alongside the Constabulary, we’re fulfilling that commitment to residents.
