Reflecting on 2025

PCC's blog

As the year draws to a close, I want to take this opportunity to thank the people of Gloucestershire for your support, and community spirit throughout 2025. This is my fifth Christmas as your Police and Crime Commissioner, and during that time I’ve seen many changes nationally, but what never changes is the importance of people.

Emergency services personnel who put their own lives on the line every day to help others, our parish, district and county councils who work hard to keep things running, and the community spirit of you all to look out for one another.

This year has brought challenges, particularly financial pressures that affect the services we all rely on. Gloucestershire’s population has grown significantly, yet our funding hasn’t kept pace. This has already forced us to cut our Police Community Support Officers and police staff, with another tough year to come. I continue to press the Government for fairer funding because I know how important it is that our communities feel safe and supported.

Despite these challenges, there have been real successes. My Office has secured an extra £2.7 million for Victims Services. We’ve also helped launch a new Domestic Abuse Strategy that brings together health, housing, education, voluntary organisations, and local authorities. This joined-up approach prioritises the safety and recovery of victims and is a model for how partnership can make a real difference.

We’ve also invested in technology and strengthened teams tackling serious issues like male violence against women and girls, and crimes against children.

I know many of you will have heard about the Government’s decision to abolish Police and Crime Commissioners in 2028. While I’ve expressed my disappointment at how this was handled, my focus remains on serving Gloucestershire for the remainder of my term. I will continue to fight strongly for the resources and staff our great County deserves.

As we head into Christmas, I encourage everyone to take time for family, friends, and community. The festive season is a chance to pause, reflect, and appreciate what matters most. Thank you in particular if you volunteer, support your neighbours, or for simply being a part of the fabric that makes Gloucestershire such a special place.

From me and my team, have a wonderful Christmas and a happy, peaceful New Year.
