PCC Chris Nelson Secures Long-Term Support for Victims of Sexual Violence in Gloucestershire

Police and Crime Commissioner Chris Nelson, has reaffirmed his commitment to supporting victims of sexual violence by awarding over £500,000 annually to First Light in partnership with Barnardos.

The funding, including contributions from the Ministry of Justice and NHS England, will ensure the continuation of Independent Sexual Violence Advisor (ISVA) services across Gloucestershire, offering specialist support to adults and children victims of sexual violence.

Chris Nelson, PCC said:

“Tacking male violence against women and girls is a top priority for me and my Office.

“Although I acknowledge anyone of any sex can be abused or be a perpetrator. We know for a fact that disproportionately these crimes are committed by men against women.

“These violating crimes are truly traumatising and that is why it is important that victims in Gloucestershire have access to specialist support.

“First Light are established at bringing about change and improvement to the services for people who are victims of sexual violence.”

Independent Sexual Violence Advisors play a vital role in the recovery journey of victims of sexual violence. They provide independent support tailored to each person’s needs, from navigating the criminal justice system to advocating for victims and helping with coping skills.

The recommissioning of this vital service highlights the PCC’s dedication to ensuring victims of sexual violence are treated with respect and dignity. And are provided the specialist care and support they require.

The contract will commence on August 1, 2025, and run for up to seven years, ensuring stability and consistent care for victims across Gloucestershire
